Trying to Make Some Changes

I did 1/2 mile bike intervals on Sunday. This is me trying to improve my cycling (my weakest leg). I was averaging 17-19 mph, which is a good start (but not totally impressive).

I actually ran yesterday. I haven't run since my last tri, so my legs were aching a little bit. I did something new afterwards... I iced my knees. I haven't done that since high school, and it felt really good (numb the pain...).

I'm trying to start counting calories again, but it's not going so well. I usually make it about 2/3 of the way through the day, then give up and eat 3 cookies and a cheese quesadilla. I'm thinking of buying a food scale. I'm wondering if that would make my calorie tracking easier. I would like to lose 10 lbs by Labor Day, but that seems a little unrealistic for me right now.

I need to give Reagan a tune-up. I would also like to look into buying some cycling shoes. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where on earth I would even begin doing that? I'm nervous to leave it up to a local bike shop, cause they might try to sell me something I don't need.

That's about it. I've been busy. Well... not busy, necessarily, but just not bored like I was in Illinois. I have a boyfriend and a dog and a challenging job now. I have far less time to blog.

I've been working 8am - 5pm the past 3 days, so I'm totally exhausted. I can't wait to get back to my 2pm - 11pm schedule. Stupid crazy television industry.

You may want to watch (over the course of a week or two) online sites like Chainlove, which offer incredible deals on cycling stuff - one product at a time (like Woot). There's often shoes in there.

Nine weeks until Labor Day, you can do it.

There's a great website called Fitday.com for logging food on. I've used it and it really helps hold you accountable since you see it in writing!
Nice to hear you're liking the new job and you find it challenging.

That's what I like to hear, more cycling!!! lol

As far as cycling shoes, a funny rule-of-thumb I made up is the tougher the shoes are to walk in off the bike the better they are on the bike. Underlying meaning, if they have really stiff soles like carbon and are tough to walk in, the stiffer they will be on the bike thus minimizing power loss due to flexy, sloppy shoes. It's totally worth it to find a higher end shoe that you feels comfortable on your foot. Use the bike shop to try on a bunch of brands to see what fits you best, then go check prices on-line. I went with SIDI MTB shoes because Shimano, Mavic and Bontrager all had arches that were to high for my flat feet but if I didn't do that I would have been stuck! Just my two cents. :)

Hmm, 9 weeks till Labor Day, that is barely more than a pound a week - not too impossible! Journaling works well for me - I just use a notebook. Though fitday.com and sparkpeople.com are good - if you have the time...They are worth checking out. You can also log workouts in. Good luck!!

19 mph doesn't seem slow to me! Everyone I talk to seems to love bike shoes, so I'd think that getting those would help a lot. Of course, the last bike I had was a huffy, so I'm no help at all.
