You'll Want to Hear This

I have an announcement. This morning, I signed up for another triathlon.

It's called the J-Hawk Late Bird Triathlon. It's held at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater towards the end of the month.

The reason for all this indecisive delay was because I was unsure if I'd be able to make it back to work on time after running this race. I contacted the Race Director with my concern and receieved this email reply:

"Hi,

When you sign up, send me a reminder e-mail that you need to leave at a specific time.

A 10 minute swim puts you right in the middle of the pack, so you could end up at 10:45am or 12:30 (I split the times in 1/2- the first ½ goes slow to fast, then the 2nd group of waves goes fast to slow).

Thanks."

Well, that pretty much sealed it for me. If my wave went off at 10:45, I would have plenty of time to finish and make it back to work by 3 pm.

So I'm all signed up and pumped. It's a full-blown Sprint with a 500 yard swim (done in an indoor pool... yay!), a 13.7 mile bike, and a 3.1 mile run. I can totally do all those distances... I've just never done them one after another before.

That's where my trusty training schedule comes in. I'm using the final month of a run-heavy Sprint-specific training schedule. This only works because I'm still pretty trained up from the last 3+ months.

Today is exactly 4 weeks from the race, but I'm taking the day off due to yesterday's 5K. My month of training officially starts tomorrow.

If one triathlon makes me a triathlete, what does two make me?

I guess we'll find out...

On the Waterfront 5K Race Report

My Culvers-induced illness quickly subsided and 6:30 am came sooner than I'd have liked.

These early morning races always throw me. When I woke up, weather.com said it was 55 degrees. I cracked a window to test it for myself... yep, that's cold. So I battled with my common sense whether I should go with shorts and a tank top or capris and a t-shirt. But weather.com promised it wouldn't hit above 70 before 9am, so I went with the layers (complete with light jacket).

My mom and I headed out around 7 and walked towards downtown to where the race was being held. Of course, by the time we arrived at the start line, we had warmed up and the sun was coming up, and sure enough... I was the only one all covered up.

I got my race packet and my number... 177. I liked that number.

The sun rose and the race neared.

I had never done a race this large before. There were about 350 people standing at the starting line alongside me. Because of this, I knew the people at the back of the pack probably wouldn't cross the starting line until at least 20 seconds after the gun went off. That's an unfortunate hit to their times.

The ages of runners varied pretty drastically. To my left was a boy no older than 13 who kept playing with his bangs and smelled like he hadn't discovered deoderant yet. To my right was a woman no younger than 75 and no taller than 5 feet who was wearing only a sports bra and some running shorts pulled up above her bellybutton. Yet I knew it was more than likely both of these characters would beat me to the finish.

It was a simple out-and-back course that went along the well-traveled bike path near my house. It was quite a sight to see 350 runners forced to run single-file and dodge early morning path users who dared share the pavement with us.

Meanwhile, back at the starting line, fishiness ensued concerning the timing clock. My mom said that about 3 minutes into our run, the clock suddenly jumped up to 7 minutes. The timers panicked and "re-adjusted" the clock again. No one is really sure what exactly happened.

The run went well. Time passed quickly and before I knew it, I was halfway done. As soon as I hit the halfway point, I began counting the runners behind me. The reason is because they were giving out cash prizes to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers... but also the person who finished right in the middle. That could be me! But my counting proved less hopeful. There were only 100 people behind me. That meant I'd have to pass about 80 people in less than a mile and a half. No thanks. To be honest, I didn't do much passing at all during my run. Although, if I was graded on graciously letting OTHERS pass, I'd get an A+. At least 40 people found me too unbearably slow to stay behind.

The last 1/4 mile was a straight flat open road which ended with the promising gleam of chute flags flapping in the wind. I neared the crowd and kept my eyes glued to the clock. My goal was 29:00 and it was 28:40. I can do this.

But I suppose the chute was farther away than it first appeared. 28:50.

I was wheezing and dying and going my fastest. 28:59.

29:04. That was what the clock read when I crossed the finish line. So close.

I'm more than willing to accept that as a victory, except that something seemed off. First thing I say to my mom is, "I can't believe I didn't get under 29. I was going so fast... my first mile split was 8:50!" That's when she told me about the clock freaking out. Hmmm. I guess we'll just have to wait until the times are posted online to know for sure.

I hit my first mile at 8:50
I hit my second mile at 18:15
I finished at 29:04

Overall, I'm very happy that I officially PRed my 5K time. Go me!

At 9am, there was a 1/4 mile kids race that my mom and I just HAD to see. The kids were generally under the age of 7, with some of them young enough to be in diapers. It seems like nothing can make you laugh as hard as watching 3 year-olds try to run a 1/4 mile course... mainly because they have no idea what they're even doing. One small boy just stopped about 100 yards out and stood there confused. Awesome. Children are always good for a little entertainment and mockery.

I'm totally cursing my work schedule this time of year. Working 3-11pm every Saturday and Sunday really gets in the way of normal social activities and athletic events. Every time I want to do a triathlon or run a 5K, I have to calculate distance from home and whether or not I can make it back to work on time.

Our town is holding a huge music festival this weekend. It's only 3 blocks from my apartment and I'm missing out. This afternoon was the first time I got to be a part of it... and only because I was sanctioned to tape a wheelchair basketball game for work.

Sometimes I think it would be nice to just be a teacher. 8-3 workdays and summers off. Boy, what a life (I would know... because it's a gorgeous Saturday evening and I'm stuck inside a windowless room waiting for the 10 o'clock news to start (2 more hours?! Ugh)).

Ode to Every Restaurant that isn't Culvers

I just wanted to throw this out into the blogosphere... Culvers sucks.

It always SEEMS like such a good idea. But this is the THIRD time I've eaten there and felt sick immediately afterwards. And it's not just one specific Culvers... but ALL the Culvers' across the midwest (especially in Ohio, Wisconsin, and Illinois).

I should have known better. My mom even said, "I thought you swore off Culvers cause it makes you sick?" And I got a good laugh, recalling those days with combined fondness and disgust.

Well, those days are here, my friend!

I officially re-announce my Culvers boycott. Take THAT, dairyland chain!

Zero to 5K in One Day

Wow. Apparently I had no idea today was Friday. I talked to my mom on the phone last night and was completely clueless. That means I had one less day than I thought to prepare for this weekend's 5K.

I planned out an easy 2 miler this morning. I even walked a little bit just to make sure I didn't overdo it. But when I got home, my watch didn't match the "leisurely" pace I supposedly took.

2.02 miles
18:02

That's a 9.01 minute mile including my walking. Even though it felt like I was creeping along at a snail's pace, I come to find out that I was actually running faster than usual. Woops.

Tomorrow is my second official 5K (my third time running 3.1 miles without walking (I'm NOT going to walk tomorrow)).

Previous times...
Knight Run 5K, 31:45
Unofficial 5K, 29:27

Thus, my goal for tomorrow is under 29 minutes.

I'm excited about this run. It's much larger than my first 5K, and it's right across the river from where I live. My camera lady (aka Mom) is coming with tomorrow to cheer me on, so pictures will be posted later.

Happy Labor Day weekend everyone!

Official Race Photos

Race photos have been posted and all I have to say is I should have gotten first place...

... for hottness!

After my swim ("Baywatch" anyone?):

During the bike:

Look at me go!

Tired on the run...

(Note: my choice to wear only black and white was pure coincidence (which must mean I'm dumb for not noticing until I was fully dressed)).

Here is the grand finale...

This week has been pretty dull. I keep wavering between wanting to work out and not feeling up for it, and feeling like working out but not wanting to. Why can't my body and my brain join teams?!

So as an official announcement, I WILL workout tomorrow... whether I want to or not. I have a 5K on Saturday, and I need to prepare at least a little bit (I was super sore the day after my 20 minute bike ride the other day... PATHETIC!).

To end this post, I will leave you with my favorite photo from the race photos "Lost and Found" bin. Talk about ENTHUSIASM!

We should ALL be so happy while racing.

Life After a Triathlon

Well, the first thing I did after my triathlon ended was go into a physical and mental coma. I don't really remember anything from the time I left Chicago until 36 hours later.

My back still isn't better, so I'm trying to take it easy. I had yesterday off work, and I didn't feel well enough to go work out, so I channeled my energy towards vamping up my living room.

A minor accomplishment to most... but I managed to successfully string some of my photographs up on the wall using wire and metallic clips.

White on white is hard to work with, so this gave them a little more depth than they had before.

This decorating frenzy also involved shopping...

And rearranging...

And fake flowers...

All in all, a productive day.

But when I woke up this morning, I was once again left with nothing to do (not that I'm complaining! I would take a day of boredom at home over a day at work any time!). I felt a little guilty, because not counting the race on Saturday, today marked a full week of not working out. My back is definitely better than it was 5 days ago, so I decided to take my back and Reagan out for a spin.

My "spin" ended up lasting only 20 minutes. The wind was making me angry and my back was acheing some. The very LAST thing I want to do is make it worse (I have a 5K this Saturday)!

Distance: 4.55 miles
Time: 19:34
Maximum Speed: 19.7 mph
Average Speed: 13.4 mp
Calories Burned: 158.5
Fat Burned: 19.5

I've been trying to negotiate in my head whether I should buy my wetsuit or not. I rented it from wetsuitrental.com for $40. The nice part about renting from them is if you like your wetsuit, they will put that $40 towards the purchase of it.

When I emailed them asking about the price, I was surprised to find out that the suit they rented me was brand new.

They said they would sell it to me for an additional $140 (this exact wetsuit runs for $190 brand new). But I also have the choice of using my $40 to purchase one of their used wetsuits, which would most likely be cheaper. Decisions decisions.

On a different, more secretive note, there is something I've been thinking about. This "something" is called the J-Hawk Late Bird Triathlon.

The reason I'm whispering (yes... I'm whispering), is because it's just a THOUGHT... a tiny little bud of an idea in my head.

It has to stay a small idea because there are a lot of IFs. IF I have that day off work or IF I can get that day off work. IF my back begins to feel better. IF I can do that distance (it's a sprint). IF IF IF.

((On the plus side... the swim is in an indoor pool, the triathlon isn't for another month, and it's only an hour away from here)).

Hmmmmmmmmmm....................
